Is there Widgetsmith for Android? What to use instead

Widgetsmith made custom home screen widgets popular on the iPhone. If you have an Android phone and are looking for it on Google Play, you won't find it: it is made for iPhone and iPad. The good news is that Android has had home screen widgets for far longer, and you can build the same kind of look in a few minutes.

Is Widgetsmith available on Android?

No. At the time of writing, Widgetsmith is available on Apple's App Store only, and there is no official Android version on Google Play. Be careful with apps or APK files that use its name on other websites: they are not the official app.

What people use Widgetsmith for

  • Clocks and dates in a chosen font and colour.
  • Photo widgets with their own pictures.
  • Calendar, weather and reminders at a glance.
  • A home screen where every widget matches.

All of these are possible on Android, and Android widgets can also be interactive: you can tick a task, count a tasbih or start a timer right on the home screen.

The Android way: Wadiget

Wadiget gives you more than 250 ready-made widgets that you customise with a live preview: clocks, dates, photo widgets, calendar, weather, reminders, to-do lists, notes, prayer times and more. Each can be glass, solid or a gradient of two colours, with your own colours, fonts and size.

It is free on Google Play for phones and tablets with Android 10 or later.

Recreate an iPhone-style home screen

  1. Pick a calm wallpaper with space for widgets.
  2. Add a large clock or date widget at the top, in the font you like.
  3. Add a photo widget with one of your own pictures.
  4. Add a calendar or reminders widget below it.
  5. Use the same colours and corners for every widget so the screen looks like one design.

Questions

Can I install Widgetsmith on Android with an APK?

There is no official Android version. An APK that claims to be Widgetsmith does not come from its developer and may be unsafe. Install widget apps from Google Play instead.

Are Android widgets as customisable as iPhone widgets?

Yes, and they can do more: Android widgets can be resized freely on the grid and can be interactive, for example ticking tasks or counting a tasbih without opening the app.
