When does Ramadan start?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar. It begins when the new crescent moon is seen after the 29th of Sha'ban, or after Sha'ban completes 30 days. Because the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, Ramadan starts around 11 days earlier each year.

How the countdown works

The countdown uses the Umm al-Qura calendar to find the first day of the next Ramadan, and counts down to midnight at the start of that day in your time zone. Check your local announcement for the confirmed date.

FAQ

How many days are left until Ramadan?

The live counter at the top of this page shows the days, hours and minutes left until the expected start of Ramadan in your time zone.

Why might Ramadan start a day earlier or later in my country?

Many countries confirm the start of Ramadan by sighting the moon on the evening before, so the actual first day can differ by one day from the calculated date.

Can I have a Ramadan countdown on my home screen?

Yes. Wadiget has a Ramadan countdown widget, alongside prayer times and Hijri date widgets.
