What is the Hijri calendar?
The Hijri (Islamic) calendar counts years from the Hijra, the Prophet's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. It is a lunar calendar: each month starts with the new crescent moon and has 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian one. That is why Ramadan and Eid move earlier every year.
Which calendar should I choose?
Umm al-Qura is the official calendar of Saudi Arabia and the most widely used one. Astronomical follows calculations of the moon, tabular and civil use a fixed arithmetic pattern. Many countries begin Ramadan and the Eids by sighting the moon, so the real date where you live can differ by a day.
FAQ
What is the Hijri date today?
It is shown at the top of this page for your time zone, by the Umm al-Qura calendar unless you choose another one.
Why is the Hijri date different in my country?
Some countries start each month by sighting the new moon rather than by calculation, so their date can be a day earlier or later than Umm al-Qura.
Can I see the Hijri date on my home screen?
Yes. Wadiget has widgets that show the Hijri date beside the Gregorian date or a clock, with a choice of Umm al-Qura, astronomical or tabular calendars.
