How to play Water Sort

Each level gives you a few tubes filled with layers of coloured water, and one or two empty tubes. Sort the colours so that every tube is either empty or full of a single colour.

  1. Tap a tube to pick it up. Its top colour is the one that will pour.
  2. Tap another tube to pour into it. Water can only land on the same colour or in an empty tube.
  3. A tube holds four layers. If there isn't room for everything, only what fits is poured.
  4. Keep going until each colour fills its own tube. The level is then complete.

Levels, undo and the extra tube

Levels are made from their number, so level 12 is the same puzzle for everyone. Before you see a level, a solver checks that it can be finished, so there is always a way through.

The first levels use three or four colours. New colours and tubes are added as you go, up to twelve colours.

  • Undo takes back your last pour, as many times as you need.
  • Restart puts the level back the way it started.
  • Hint shows a pour that leads to a solution from where you are.
  • Extra tube adds one empty tube, once per level, for when you're short of space.

Tips for hard levels

  • Look before you pour. Find which colours are close to the top and which are buried.
  • Keep an empty tube free for as long as you can: it is your most useful space.
  • Pour onto a matching colour rather than into an empty tube whenever you can.
  • Finish one tube at a time. A completed tube is one less to think about.
  • If you're going around in circles, restart: a fresh look often shows the way.

Colour-blind friendly

Turn on colour-blind symbols to show a shape on every layer of water, a different one for each colour. The colours were also chosen to stay apart in brightness, not only in hue.

Questions and answers

Is every level solvable?

Yes. Each level is checked by a solver before it is shown, so there is always at least one way to finish it.

How many levels are there?

There is no last level. New ones are made as you play, and they get harder until they reach twelve colours.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your level, the puzzle in progress and your settings are saved in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere.

What happens when I use the extra tube?

An empty tube is added to the level. You get one per level, and the next level starts without it.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. Move between the tubes with Tab and press Enter or Space to pick one up and to pour.

Is Water Sort free?

Yes. It is free to play in any browser, with no account and nothing to download, on phones and computers.
