Qibla direction

The direction of the Kaaba from where you are, worked out in your browser. On a phone, the compass turns with you and tells you when you face the Qibla.

Your location

Your location stays in this browser and is only used to work out the times. It is never sent to us.

Use your location or choose a city to see the Qibla.

Hold the phone flat, away from metal and magnets. If the direction jumps, move the phone in a figure 8 a few times to calibrate it.

How the Qibla direction is found

The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. This tool takes the shortest path over the surface of the Earth, the great circle, from your position to the Kaaba, and gives its starting direction in degrees from true north. That is the same method used by mosques and prayer apps.

How to use the compass

  1. Tap Use my location, or choose your city.
  2. On a phone, tap Start the compass and allow access to motion sensors if asked.
  3. Hold the phone flat and turn slowly until the arrow points straight up and the dial turns green.
  4. Without a compass, point N on the dial to the north and face the direction of the arrow.

FAQ

How accurate is the online Qibla compass?

The direction itself is exact to a fraction of a degree. The compass is only as good as your phone's sensor, so keep it away from metal and magnets, and calibrate it if the reading jumps.

Why does the Qibla point north-east in America?

Because the Earth is round. The shortest path from North America to Mecca crosses the Atlantic towards the north-east, even though Mecca looks south-east on a flat map.

Is my location saved?

No. The direction is worked out in your browser, and your location is never sent to us.

Is there a Qibla widget for my phone?

Wadiget has Islamic widgets for the Android home screen: prayer times with the Azan, the Hijri date, a tasbih and a Ramadan countdown.
